“That was a memorable day to me, for it made great changes in me. But, it is the same with any life. Imagine one selected day struck out of it and think how different its course would have been. Pause, you who read this, and think for a long moment of the long chain of iron or gold, of thorns or flowers, that would never have bound you, but for the formation of the first link on that memorable day.” — Charles Dickens, Great Expectations
It’s my favorite question: how did you meet? When did your story begin?
While I like the certainty of love at first sight (my father’s story about seeing my mother at the top of a staircase for the first time and knowing “he couldn’t let her go” is one of them), I’m just as — if not more — interested in the unexpectedly ordinary, poetically inappropriate, and deliciously awkward beginnings.
If you have a beginning you’d like to share, please send it to firstname.lastname@example.org. I’d love to hear from you.
